LONDON, Apr 30: The UK has raised its national terror threat level from “substantial” to “severe” following the Golders Green stabbing attack, with authorities warning that a terrorist incident is now considered highly likely in the coming months. The decision was made by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, which independently assesses threat levels, after counter-terrorism police formally classified the attack as terrorism.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed the change, noting that while the Golders Green incident was a key factor, it was not the sole reason behind the heightened alert. Officials said the threat level has been rising due to increased risks from both Islamist and far-right extremism, as well as growing concerns over state-linked threats encouraging acts of violence, including against the Jewish community.
Responding to the development, London Mayor Sadiq Khan sought to reassure residents and visitors, emphasizing that security agencies are fully prepared. He announced an increased police presence across the city, including armed officers, as part of efforts to enhance public safety in the wake of the elevated threat level.
