LONDON, May 5: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday condemned reported drone and missile strikes targeting the United Arab Emirates, calling for urgent de-escalation as tensions flare despite a fragile regional truce.
“The UK condemns the drone and missile strikes targeting the United Arab Emirates,” Starmer said in a statement, adding that “this escalation must cease.”
The UAE, a close US ally and key regional partner, said it came under a barrage of missiles and drones launched from Iran, marking the first such reported attack since a ceasefire was declared nearly a month ago.
Starmer urged Tehran to engage “meaningfully” in negotiations to ensure the truce holds and to work toward a long-term diplomatic solution.
According to Downing Street, the British leader stressed that the immediate priority is preventing further escalation and stabilizing the situation, as incidents continue to threaten security around the Strait of Hormuz.
