UK MP Mackinlay shares brave battle with sepsis and amputations

LONDON, May 22: Craig Mackinlay, the Conservative MP for South Thanet, has bravely revealed his harrowing ordeal battling sepsis, a life-threatening condition that led to the amputation of both his hands and feet last year.

Mackinlay, 57, disclosed the details of his traumatic experience, which began in September last year when he was rushed to hospital after being diagnosed with sepsis. Sepsis is a severe immune response to infection, causing the body to attack its tissues and organs.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Mackinlay recounted how he faced kidney and liver failure, blood clots, and the shocking discoloration of his limbs as they turned black. Despite the grim prognosis and slim chances of survival, Mackinlay emerged from the ordeal with a fighting spirit.

Following a quadruple amputation last December, Mackinlay was fitted with prosthetic legs and hands. Reflecting on the adjustment to life with prosthetics, Mackinlay described his new hands as “amazing,” though he acknowledges the profound loss he feels.

With unwavering determination, Mackinlay is set to return to public life, attending Westminster for prime minister’s questions on Wednesday. Accompanied by his wife and four-year-old daughter, Mackinlay aims to inspire as the first “bionic MP.”

Recalling the critical role his wife played in saving his life, Mackinlay credits her quick actions for ensuring he received urgent medical attention. He emphasizes the importance of early intervention in sepsis cases, highlighting the need for awareness and prompt medical response.

Despite the challenges ahead, Mackinlay remains resolute, expressing gratitude for the support he has received and the opportunity to continue serving his constituency. His resilience serves as a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
