LONDON, Apr 19: The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has raised the threat level in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Persian Gulf to “critical,” citing escalating tensions and intensified naval movements.
In a statement, the British military said there is a “high level of activity by naval forces in the region,” warning of an increased “risk of attack or miscalculation” in one of the world’s most vital shipping routes.
The warning comes as Iran has reimposed strict controls on transit through the strait, while the United States continues to enforce a blockade on Iranian ports and surrounding waters.
UKMTO also reported multiple incidents on Saturday involving Iranian forces targeting vessels transiting the strait, further heightening concerns over maritime security.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical artery for global energy supplies, and any disruption to shipping through the narrow passage is likely to have significant implications for international trade and oil markets.
