LONDON (AP), Mar 31: British Defence Secretary John Healey has defended the United Kingdom’s close alliance with the United States despite recent criticism from US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth over Britain’s naval presence in the Middle East.
Speaking in Qatar on Tuesday, Healey said the United States remains a “uniquely close ally” of the United Kingdom, stressing that both countries share an unparalleled level of military and intelligence cooperation.
He added that his priority is ensuring the protection of Britain, its citizens, and its bases, as well as supporting allies and partners amid ongoing regional tensions.
The comments come after Hegseth questioned Britain’s naval deployment in the region, suggesting that the Royal Navy should play a greater role in securing critical waterways.
In response to escalating security concerns, Healey also announced that the UK will deploy additional missile and air defence systems to Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, while extending the operational use of Typhoon fighter jets stationed in Qatar.
