ABU DHABI, May 20: The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned what it described as “terrorist attacks” involving drones launched from Iraqi territory, one of which targeted the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant and caused damage to an external electrical generator.
In a statement, the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attacks represent a “flagrant violation” of the country’s sovereignty and airspace, and breach international law, international humanitarian law, and the United Nations Charter.
The ministry said the incident included multiple drone attacks originating from Iraq, with one striking infrastructure outside the perimeter of the Barakah facility, the UAE’s only nuclear power plant.
It added that the UAE “strongly condemns and absolutely rejects” such attacks, warning that targeting civilian infrastructure poses a serious threat to regional stability and security across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.
The ministry also called on the Iraqi government to take urgent and decisive action to prevent any hostile activities originating from its territory, stressing the need for Baghdad to act “immediately, responsibly and unconditionally” in line with international obligations.
It further urged Iraq to play a constructive role in promoting regional security and stability, while safeguarding its sovereignty and maintaining responsible engagement with neighbouring states.
The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, located in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, is a key component of the UAE’s civilian energy programme and the first nuclear power station in the Arab world.
