ABU DHABI, May 19: The Ministry of Defence announced that UAE air defence systems intercepted six hostile drones over the past 48 hours after they attempted to target civilian and vital facilities across the country.
According to the ministry, air defence forces successfully detected, intercepted and neutralised the UAVs with a high level of readiness and efficiency, with no casualties or damage reported to critical infrastructure.
The ministry also revealed preliminary findings from investigations into the May 17, 2026 attack targeting the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. Technical tracking and monitoring confirmed that the three drones involved in that incident — two of which were intercepted while the third struck an electricity generator outside the plant’s inner perimeter — had originated from Iraqi territory. Authorities added that the subsequently intercepted UAVs were also launched from Iraq.
The Ministry of Defence stressed that the United Arab Emirates reserves the right to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and national security in accordance with international law and conventions. It also affirmed the full readiness of the armed forces to confront any threats targeting the country’s security and strategic assets.
