UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan
ABU DHABI, May 17: The United Arab Emirates has told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it reserves the full right to respond following a drone strike that caused a fire in an electrical generator outside the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, according to state news agency WAM.
UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan conveyed the message to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, stressing that the UAE had the sovereign right to respond to what he described as “terrorist attacks.”
He said the targeting of civilian infrastructure and vital facilities constituted a “flagrant violation of international law,” WAM reported.
In a separate statement, Qatar strongly condemned the drone attack on the UAE, describing it as a “blatant violation” of international law and a serious threat to regional security and stability.
The Qatari foreign ministry said the attack “crossed all red lines” by targeting critical infrastructure, expressing full solidarity with the UAE and support for any measures it takes to safeguard its sovereignty, security, and the safety of its facilities.
