UAE Oil Giant ADNOC Rejects Iran’s Claim Over Strait of Hormuz Closure Rights

ABU DHABI (AP), Apr 12: The head of Abu Dhabi’s state energy company has rejected any suggestion that Iran has the right to close the Strait of Hormuz, reinforcing a broader Gulf Arab position following the collapse of recent negotiations in Pakistan.

Sultan Al Jaber, chief executive of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, said on social media that any attempt to block the waterway would go beyond a regional dispute and amount to a threat to global economic stability.

“Any attempt to do so is not a regional issue; it is the disruption of a global economic lifeline and a direct threat to the energy, food, and health security of every nation,” he said, calling such a move a “dangerous precedent.”

The remarks come amid heightened tensions after US-Iran talks ended without agreement, raising renewed concerns over the security of key maritime routes used for global oil and gas shipments.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, with a significant share of the world’s seaborne oil passing through it.

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), which plays a central role in the UAE’s energy exports, previously declared force majeure earlier this year, citing disruptions linked to regional instability. Oil and gas account for roughly 15% of the UAE’s gross domestic product.
