ABU DHABI, May 6: The United Arab Emirates has condemned what it described as “hostile” statements by Iran regarding Abu Dhabi’s cooperation with the United States, stressing that its international and defence partnerships are a purely sovereign matter.

In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected Iran’s claims that the country’s cooperation with the US threatens Tehran’s security and national interests. The ministry said the UAE reserves its full sovereign, legal, diplomatic and military rights to respond to any threat, allegation or hostile act.

The exchange marks a further escalation in tensions between the two countries. The UAE had reported attacks in recent days, following several weeks of relative calm after a US-announced ceasefire. Iran denied carrying out any operations against the UAE, but warned of a “crushing response” if any action against Iran were launched from UAE territory.

The UAE reiterated that its foreign and defence relations are based on its national interests and sovereign decisions.
