ABU DHABI, May 4: The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned what it described as a drone attack targeting a commercial vessel linked to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) while it was transiting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The vessel, identified as a national carrier affiliated with ADNOC, was reportedly struck by two drones during its passage through the busy maritime corridor. No injuries were reported in the incident.
In an official statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs) denounced the attack and said it constitutes a serious violation of international maritime norms, including United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, which underscores the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and prohibits the targeting of commercial shipping.
The Ministry said that any attempt to obstruct maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz or use it as a tool of political or economic pressure amounts to unacceptable conduct that threatens regional stability and global energy security. It further described such actions as undermining international trade routes that are essential for the movement of oil and goods worldwide.
Without directly naming responsibility, the statement referred to the incident as part of “unprovoked attacks” on commercial vessels and called for the immediate cessation of hostilities in the region. It also urged full and unconditional reopening and protection of maritime routes to ensure safe navigation through one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints.
The UAE stressed that safeguarding maritime security is critical not only for regional peace but also for the stability of the global economy, warning that continued escalation in the Gulf waters could have wide-ranging consequences for international trade and energy markets.
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Gulf to the Arabian Sea, remains one of the most sensitive shipping lanes in the world, with a significant share of global oil shipments passing through it daily.
