Two thirds of ‘expats’ in private sector receive less than KD 180 – MoI starts monitoring unauthorized news websites

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 27: Expatriates working in the Ministry of Health receive salaries ranging from KD 120 for menial jobs to KD 300 for technical jobs and nursing, and salaries exceed KD 2,500 for specialized medical jobs; whereas expatriates’ salaries in the Ministry of Education range from KD 120 to KD 525.
Statistics from the Public Authority for Civil Information (PACI) as of July showed that the number of expatriates working in the Ministry of Health reached 36,520 or 44 percent of the total expatriate workforce in the government sector; while 32,790 expatriates are employed in the Ministry of Education or 40 percent of the total number of expatriates working in the government sector.
Majority of expatriates in State departments do menial jobs such as messengers and printers and they hold primary school certificates.
As at Aug 22 this year, statistics from PACI revealed that the number of expatriates in the government sector reached 78,739 and those in the private sector reached 1.5 million.
Two thirds of expatriates in the private sector receive less than KD 180 salary and they constitute 59.29 percent of the total number of expatriates in this sector.
About 43.19 percent of expatriates in the private sector receive salaries ranging from KD 60 to KD 120, 24.2 percent receive KD 180 to KD 360, 16.51 percent receive more than KD 360 and 1.63 percent of them receive less than KD 60.
Moreover, the salaries of 27.23 percent of expatriates in the private sector range from KD 180 to KD 420, 14.58 percent receive KD 120 to KD 180, and 13.48 percent receive more than KD 420.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Information has started monitoring unauthorized news websites in preparation for taking legal actions against them, reports Al-Rai daily.
Director of Electronic Publishing Department at the ministry Lafi Al-Subai’e said the ministry, with the aim of enforcing the law that regulates electronic media after the deadline in July for news websites to obtain license, has started enumerating the sites for which the owners did not apply for a license.
He indicated that a list is being prepared and the owners of those sites will be referred to the competent authorities for violating the electronic media law, adding that their websites will be closed down.
Al-Subai’e revealed that the department has since received 486 applications for licenses, adding that around 174 of them have been completed while the procedures for the rest are on the verge of completion.
On the other hand, an informed source said the ministry is monitoring violators of the law related to electronic media, indicating that this includes online newspapers, news websites or even TV media services on the Internet.
He stressed that no professional electronic media will be allowed without a permit.
