New Delhi, March 14: Two Indian-flagged tankers carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) have safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed on Saturday, marking a rare transit through the strategic waterway disrupted by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Tehran has largely halted maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which about one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas normally flows.
“They crossed the Strait of Hormuz early Saturday morning safely and are en route to India,” Rajesh Kumar Sinha, India’s special secretary of the ministry, said during a news briefing in New Delhi.
The tankers, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, are carrying approximately 92,700 metric tonnes of LPG and are expected to reach India’s western ports of Mundra and Kandla in the coming days.
