KUWAIT CITY, Nov 20: Two Ethiopians were arrested along with 22 domestic workers for running a bogus manpower office and trading with domestic workers who were reported as absconding. According to a press statement issued by Ministry of Interior, when General Department for Residency Affairs received information about this gang, investigations were carried out by a team that was formed for this purpose.

The team discovered that the owner of the bogus office would reach an understanding with housemaids who ran away from their sponsors’ house. He provided shelter for them and jobs under different sponsors. Securitymen raided the office and arrested the Ethiopian expatriate and his female assistant of same nationality.

They also arrested 22 other individuals who were in violation of the law such as absconding reports against them and their involvement in some cases. Arrest warrants were also issued against some of them. All arrested individuals were referred to the concerned authorities for necessary legal action against them.

General Department for Residency Affairs urged Kuwaiti citizens and expatriates to deal with only licensed domestic labor offices in order to avoid being cheated. It requested those with information about such bogus domestic offices to contact General Department for Residency Affairs.

Meanwhile, an Ethiopian woman was arrested at Kuwait International Airport for attempting to smuggle six bags of betel leaves into the country. According to security sources, customs officers at the airport checked the luggage of the passenger and discovered six bags of betel leaves hidden among some spices. They arrested and referred her with the confiscated items to the Directorate General for Drug Control for necessary legal action against her.
