Turkiye embassy in Kuwait marks July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day

KUWAIT CITY, July 16: The Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Kuwait organized a commemoration event at the Embassy’s Diwaniya Hall on July 16, 2026 on the occasion of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day. The event, which was postponed to 16 July due to the period of mourning declared in Kuwait following the passing of the late Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, father of the Amir of Qatar, was attended by members of the Turkish community residing in Kuwait, representatives of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the media. The event commenced with a moment of silence and the singing of the National Anthem in memory of the martyrs who lost their lives during the treacherous coup attempt carried out by the Fetullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) on 15 July , 2016, as well as all other martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

A recitation from the Holy Qur’an was subsequently offered in memory of the martyrs. In her remarks at the event, H.E. Tuba Nur Sönmez, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to the State of Kuwait, emphasized that 15 July marked a historic turning point during which the Turkish nation stood firmly in defense of democracy, the national will, and its independence. Ambassador Sönmez noted that the courage, determination, and sacrifices demonstrated by the Turkish people in the face of the coup attempt constituted a powerful testament to the Republic of Türkiye’s unwavering commitment to democratic values. She also commemorated the martyrs of 15 July with respect, gratitude, and mercy, while expressing appreciation for the nation’s veterans. As part of the program, a video presentation was screened highlighting the events of the night of 15 July 2016 and the heroic resistance displayed by the Turkish nation in defense of democracy.

At the conclusion of the event, guests were served Ashoura, a traditional dessert that symbolizes unity, solidarity, togetherness, and sharing in Turkish culture. The serving of Ashoura was presented to the guests as a symbolic reflection of the spirit of national unity and solidarity demonstrated by the Turkish people on the night of 15 July. Ambassador Sönmez was joined by H.E. Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Duaij Al-Sabah, Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights, H.E. Ambassador Sadeq Marafi, Assistant Foreign Minister for International Organizations Affairs of the State of Kuwait, Ambassadors, representatives of diplomatic missions accredited to Kuwait; officials of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and members of the Turkish community residing in Kuwait.
