WASHINGTON, Apr 18: US President Donald Trump has warned that U.S. military action against Iran could resume if a ceasefire expires without a new agreement, while insisting that the ongoing naval blockade will remain in place regardless of negotiations.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said he may choose not to extend the ceasefire if talks fail, adding that continued restrictions would likely be accompanied by renewed airstrikes. “You’ll have a blockade and unfortunately, we’ll have to start dropping bombs again,” he said, signaling a potential escalation in tensions.
Despite the warning, Trump expressed optimism that a deal could still be reached, telling reporters aboard Air Force One that he believes an agreement “is going to happen,” particularly concerning Iran’s nuclear program.
The U.S. president also firmly rejected any suggestion that Iran could impose tolls or restrictions on maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that such measures would not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, United States Central Command confirmed that 21 vessels had turned back toward Iran since the blockade began earlier in the week, following directives issued by U.S. naval forces.
Trump reiterated that the blockade on Iranian ports would remain “in full force” until a comprehensive agreement is reached, underscoring Washington’s continued pressure campaign amid high-stakes negotiations.
