WASHINGTON, Apr 9: US President Donald Trump has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reduce military strikes in Lebanon, in an effort to support ongoing negotiations with Iran, according to a senior US official cited by NBC News. While Lebanon is not formally included in the current ceasefire framework, Israel reportedly agreed to act as a “helpful partner” to facilitate diplomatic progress.
Meanwhile, Tehran has hardened its stance, linking any future negotiations directly to a ceasefire in Lebanon. Iranian sources, cited by Fars News Agency, said ongoing Israeli attacks render talks “meaningless,” insisting that halting the conflict in Lebanon is a non-negotiable condition for entering any new negotiation process. Iran has also demanded that the United States formally accept a proposed 10-point framework before agreeing to a ceasefire.
In a related development, Iran’s deputy foreign minister Saeed Khatibzadeh confirmed that Tehran had been close to responding to a ceasefire violation but refrained after mediation by Pakistan. He also confirmed Iran’s participation in upcoming peace talks in Islamabad, as diplomatic efforts intensify to prevent further escalation.
