WASHINGTON, Jun 13: US President Donald Trump is set to host a major mixed martial arts event on the White House grounds on Sunday, with a specially constructed arena expected to draw thousands of spectators in a spectacle he has described as “the greatest show on earth.”
The event, branded UFC Freedom 250, is being held to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States and celebrate what organizers call “the American fighting spirit.” Fourteen elite fighters are scheduled to compete in a series of matches featuring both striking and grappling disciplines.
A temporary steel arena known as “The Claw” has been erected on the South Lawn of the White House, dramatically altering the landscape of the presidential grounds. The venue is designed to accommodate around 4,000 spectators, while tens of thousands more are expected to watch the event on large screens set up nearby.
The event has also sparked controversy. Critics have questioned whether a cage-fighting tournament is an appropriate way to mark the nation’s independence, particularly as it coincides with Trump’s 80th birthday. An opposition group has reportedly filed a federal lawsuit challenging the event, arguing that it represents a misuse of national monuments and public property.
The White House spectacle reflects the long-standing relationship between Trump and Dana White, whose friendship dates back more than two decades. White has frequently credited Trump with helping the sport gain legitimacy during its early years, including by hosting UFC events at the former Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City when many venues refused to do so.
Once widely criticized and banned in dozens of states, mixed martial arts has since become one of the world's fastest-growing sports. The UFC, purchased by White and his partners for $2 million in 2001, grew into a multibillion-dollar enterprise after the sport adopted stricter regulations and safety standards.
For both Trump and White, the White House event represents a symbolic milestone in a partnership that has evolved alongside the rise of the UFC from a controversial sport to a mainstream global phenomenon.
