Trump says Xi pledged not to arm Iran

BEIJING, May 14: US President Donald Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him that Beijing would not provide military equipment to Iran, while indicating that China intended to continue purchasing Iranian oil.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Trump said Xi made a “big statement” by saying China would not arm Tehran. Trump added that China was not “fighting a war” with the United States, although Beijing wanted to maintain its oil trade with Iran.

Trump also said Xi expressed support for reaching a deal with Iran and offered China’s assistance in negotiations. “He said, ‘I would love to be a help. If I could be of any help whatsoever,’” Trump said, adding that Xi wanted to see the Strait of Hormuz remain open.
