WASHINGTON, (AP) March 26: U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran has “given us a present,” referring to what he described as Iranian approval for oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz during ongoing backchannel negotiations.

Speaking at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, Trump said Iranian officials had allowed “eight boats of oil” to transit the vital shipping lane, calling it a possible gesture of goodwill. He also suggested the vessels were operating under Pakistani flags, adding, “Well, I guess we’re dealing with the right people.”

Trump noted that the Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of global oil supplies pass, remains a critical chokepoint for international energy markets, with disruptions previously pushing oil prices close to $120 per barrel.

While acknowledging that the United States is less dependent on oil moving through the strait, he said global pricing impacts remain significant due to the nature of international markets.

The remarks came as European leaders, including German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, criticized U.S. actions regarding Iran, calling them a “dangerous mistake” in violation of international law.

Trump also commented on broader foreign policy issues, including the Russia-Ukraine war, reiterating his interest in pursuing diplomatic solutions while suggesting possible measures such as suspending fuel taxes, though noting such action would require congressional approval.
