WASHINGTON, Jun 9: US President Donald Trump has said that Iran shot down a US Army Apache helicopter while it was patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz, adding that Washington would respond to the attack.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had been informed by the US military that “last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz.”
He added that two pilots were on board the aircraft and both survived the incident without injury.
“There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack,” Trump wrote.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, where the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global shipping lane and a frequent flashpoint in US-Iran tensions.
A US investigation has found that an Iranian drone struck a US Army Apache helicopter that later crashed near the Strait of Hormuz, according to Axios, citing a senior US official. The official said it was still unclear whether the strike was intentional, adding that the incident remains under review as investigators continue to assess the circumstances surrounding the crash.
