WASHINGTON, May 1: US President Donald Trump said he is not satisfied with Iran’s latest proposal while simultaneously asserting that hostilities with Iran have “terminated,” according to a letter sent by the White House to Congress on Friday.
The letter, issued ahead of a May 1 legal deadline requiring congressional approval for continued military action, argued that hostilities had effectively ended despite the ongoing presence of U.S. forces in the region. The move allows the administration to bypass immediate authorization from lawmakers, many of whom have yet to act on the matter.
However, Trump indicated that tensions remain unresolved, warning that Iran continues to pose a “significant” threat to the United States and its armed forces, even after what he described as successful operations against the Iranian regime.
Separately, the president told reporters he was dissatisfied with Tehran’s latest proposal, delivered through Pakistan's mediation efforts. While acknowledging some progress in talks, Trump said the demands made by Iran were unacceptable.
“They’ve made strides, but I’m not sure if they ever get there,” he said, adding that negotiations—currently taking place via phone—are ongoing, though a final agreement remains uncertain.
