WASHINGTON, Aug. 17: U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he is not seeking an extension of the June framework agreement with Iran, as the 60-day negotiating period approaches its end without a comprehensive deal.
Asked by reporters whether he wanted to extend the agreement, reached with Pakistani mediation, Trump replied, “No.”
Trump said Iran wants to negotiate but is unwilling to accept what he considers necessary terms for a final agreement.
“They want to make a deal, but they are not going to make the kind of deal that I feel is necessary,” Trump said, reiterating that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
Trump Claims US Controls Strait of Hormuz
Trump also defended his recent suggestion that the Strait of Hormuz could be declared U.S. territory, saying American forces have established “total control” over the strategic waterway through a blockade.
“I mean, we control it. We control it with the blockade,” Trump said, describing the blockade as “very effective.”
Trump claimed that millions of barrels of oil were continuing to move through the region each week and said the strait remained open. He added that oil prices were falling and warned that Iran was “in big trouble.”
Trump Criticizes Oman
Trump was also asked about Oman’s role in diplomatic efforts involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
He said Oman had not “behaved very well” but indicated that Washington could deal with the situation.
“No, I don't think they behaved very well, but we'd handle them very easily, just like we do other things,” Trump said.
