WASHINGTON, April 25: U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran submitted an improved proposal shortly after he canceled a planned trip by American negotiators to Pakistan, citing dissatisfaction with Tehran’s earlier position.
Speaking to reporters before departing from Palm Beach International Airport, Trump said there was “no reason” to send officials on a long journey when the offer on the table was inadequate. “There’s no reason to wait two days, have people traveling for 16, 17 hours. We’re not doing it that way,” he said.
Trump added that a revised proposal arrived within minutes of the cancellation. “Interestingly, immediately when I canceled it, within 10 minutes, we got a new paper that was much better,” he said, while noting that it still fell short of U.S. expectations.
The president stressed that the central issue remains Iran’s nuclear program, reiterating that Tehran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. While he said Iran had made several concessions, including discussions around limits on enriched uranium, he maintained that the offer was “not enough.”
Trump also pointed to what he described as “tremendous infighting” within Iran, suggesting internal rivalries could be influencing the pace and direction of negotiations.
