WASHINGTON, April 30: US President Donald Trump on Thursday said Iran is “dying” to reach a deal with Washington, while defending his administration’s military campaign and pressure tactics following stalled negotiations.

“I mean, Iran is dying to make a deal. I can only tell you that,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “They want to make a deal… we’ll see how long they hold out.”

The president dismissed criticism of his approach, reiterating that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon remains a core US objective.

“The bottom line is… you cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon—for our country, for Israel, the Middle East, and Europe,” he said.

Trump also pointed to the broader impact of US actions, claiming Iran’s economy had been severely weakened under sustained pressure.

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sharply criticized Iran’s leadership, describing the Islamic Republic as “corrupt and shambolic” and saying it has failed to deliver a viable future for its people.

In a post on X, Bessent said Iran’s currency had fallen to an all-time low amid Washington’s ongoing economic pressure campaign, which he referred to as “Economic Fury.”

“The Iranian people deserve a new era, which the corrupt and shambolic Iranian regime cannot provide,” he said.

Bessent added that mounting strain on Iran’s oil sector and financial system underscores the need for change, arguing that the country’s leadership must acknowledge the growing hardships faced by its population.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions and continued uncertainty over the future of US-Iran relations.
