WASHINGTON, Sep 17: US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Iran has directly reached out to Washington and wants to reach a deal, as he indicated that the ongoing conflict could be nearing an end.
Asked what phase of the war the United States was currently in, Trump said, “Hopefully we are towards the end of the war.”
“They want to make a deal, and we'll see how that works out,” Trump told reporters after landing in North Carolina.
Asked whether the contact came directly from Iran or through intermediaries, Trump said he had heard from Iran directly.
Trump's remarks came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran over the Strait of Hormuz. A memorandum signed in June had outlined a framework for reopening the strategic waterway as part of efforts toward a broader peace agreement.
The United States and Israel launched large-scale attacks on Iran in February, targeting government buildings, military sites, missile infrastructure and air-defense systems. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and US bases across the region.
The conflict has since expanded across the region, while diplomatic efforts continue to seek an end to the hostilities.
