WASHINGTON, Apr 30: Former US President Donald Trump has intensified criticism of European leaders while suggesting possible reductions in US troop deployments across NATO allies, including Italy and Spain. In a recent social media post, Trump took aim at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, urging him to focus on the Russia-Ukraine war and domestic issues such as immigration and energy instead of commenting on the Iran conflict.
The remarks came shortly after Trump announced a review of US military presence in Germany, where thousands of American troops are stationed as part of NATO operations. Expanding on the issue, he told reporters he would “probably” consider reducing US forces not only in Germany but also in Italy and Spain, saying those countries have not been “of help” and describing Spain as “absolutely horrible” in terms of cooperation.
The comments mark a continuation of Trump’s increasingly critical stance toward European allies and raise questions over the future of US troop deployments across key NATO member states.
