WASHINGTON, Aug 22: US President Donald Trump stated on Friday that Iran is still not prepared to agree to "the right deal" with Washington, even as the US intensifies economic pressure on Tehran. He made these remarks to reporters before traveling to South Carolina for a rally. Trump suggested that the US would continue to observe the effects of the tightening economic measures on Iran's strained economy. He described Iran's economic and military condition in stark terms, claiming they have no money, navy, or air force, and faces 350% inflation.
Trump also asserted that the US maintains "complete control" over the region surrounding the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, including the waterway itself and its surrounding land areas.
However, the reality on the ground contrasts with the President's claims. According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains about 90% below pre-war levels. This disruption is attributed to continued security risks and frequent attacks on commercial vessels.
The conflict began in late February with a surprise US-Israeli attack on Iran, which prompted Iranian retaliation against targets in Israel and US military bases in the region. A June ceasefire and memorandum of understanding, which aimed to restore shipping through the strait, collapsed amid disputes over its implementation.
