WASHINGTON, Jul 25: US President Donald Trump halted planned military strikes on Iran on Friday as Oman-mediated talks showed progress toward a possible agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Axios reported on Saturday, citing sources familiar with the developments.

The decision ended 13 days of daily US attacks, with Trump having approved strike plans each afternoon over the previous two weeks before withholding authorization for a similar operation presented on Friday.

According to the report, two regional sources said Iran and Oman had made progress in negotiations and could reach an agreement over the weekend. Any potential deal would require Trump’s approval before taking effect.

The US military continues to prepare options for a possible return to major combat operations, but Trump has not ordered a renewed escalation, Axios reported.

The report added that while strikes could resume at short notice, Washington is currently pursuing diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions and addressing the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz.
