WASHINGTON, Apr 22: US President Donald Trump has indefinitely extended the ceasefire in the Iran conflict while delivering a sharply combative message on social media, underscoring the fragile state of diplomacy after planned talks in Islamabad failed to materialize.
Posting on Truth Social late Tuesday, Trump argued that Iran has no real interest in closing the Strait of Hormuz, insisting Tehran wants it open to continue crude exports. He escalated rhetoric by warning that any potential agreement would be impossible “unless we blow up the rest of their country,” remarks likely to heighten tensions despite the ceasefire extension.
The breakdown of negotiations in Islamabad leaves uncertainty over the next diplomatic steps, with no clear timeline for renewed talks between Washington and Tehran.
Separately, the administration is weighing an extension of a temporary waiver under the Jones Act, according to Axios. The 60-day waiver, introduced in March, permits foreign-flagged vessels to transport fuel and goods between U.S. ports—an unusual move aimed at easing supply pressures triggered by disruptions linked to the Iran conflict.
If extended, the measure is expected to help stabilize domestic fuel distribution and contain price volatility as geopolitical risks continue to unsettle global energy markets.
