WASHINGTON, May 8: US President Donald Trump downplayed Iran’s reported attacks on three American warships, describing the incident as “a trifle” while insisting that the ceasefire between the two sides remained in effect despite the latest confrontation.
Speaking during a visit to renovation works at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, Trump said the attacks had failed to inflict damage on US forces. “Yeah it is. They trifled with us today. We blew them away. They trifled. I call that a trifle,” Trump told reporters when asked whether the ceasefire was still active.
In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump warned Tehran against delaying a broader agreement with Washington, threatening more forceful military action if a deal is not reached quickly.
“We’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don’t get their Deal signed, FAST!” Trump wrote.
Trump also claimed that three US Navy destroyers successfully transited through the Strait of Hormuz while coming under Iranian fire. According to Trump, the destroyers were unharmed, but Iranian attacking forces suffered heavy losses.
“Three World Class American Destroyers just transited, very successfully, out of the Strait of Hormuz, under fire. There was no damage done to the three Destroyers, but great damage done to the Iranian attackers,” he wrote, adding that Iranian vessels and several small boats were “completely destroyed.”
There was no immediate independent confirmation regarding the extent of the reported clashes or casualties.
