WASHINGTON, Jun 24: US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Iran was making “very big concessions” in ongoing discussions with Washington, claiming the United States was “winning by a lot” as both sides continued to dispute the terms of a memorandum aimed at ending the conflict.

Speaking to reporters as he arrived at United States Capitol for a lunch meeting with Senate Republicans, Trump said the situation was progressing in Washington’s favor.

“The war is going very well,” Trump said. “As you know, we’re winning by a lot. Iran is making very big concessions. We’ll see what happens – but it has been very, very, very powerful.”

Trump’s remarks were the latest indication that his administration is seeking to portray the US military campaign and subsequent diplomatic engagement with Tehran as evidence of American leverage.

However, Iran has accused Washington of attempting to reinterpret the terms of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached to end the war, warning that conflicting statements from US officials could undermine trust.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran entered the diplomatic process in good faith despite what he described as a long history of US commitments being broken.

In a statement posted on X, Baghaei said contradictory comments from US officials regarding the war-ending agreement would deepen Iranian mistrust rather than resolve differences.

“Contradictory statements by US officials about the memorandum to end the imposed war will not reduce Iranians’ accumulated mistrust, and will only recall previous broken commitments,” he said.

The Iranian official stressed that the principle of “commitment for commitment” requires both sides to honor their obligations and avoid interpretations that contradict the agreement’s written terms.

“The US governing establishment must bear in mind that the principle of ‘commitment for commitment’ requires both sides to fulfill their obligations and avoid interpretations that completely contradict the explicit text of the memorandum of understanding,” Baghaei said.

The exchange highlights growing differences between Washington and Tehran over the implementation of the agreement, with both sides claiming to be acting in line with the understanding while accusing the other of failing to meet commitments.
