WASHINGTON, Apr 12: U.S. President Donald Trump has said the United States Navy will begin preparations for a blockade involving the Strait of Hormuz, following failed negotiations with Iran held in Islamabad.
In a series of social media posts, Trump claimed that Iran had failed to keep commitments regarding the reopening of the vital shipping route, which he described as a “global economic lifeline.” He alleged that maritime activity in the area had been disrupted by threats of mines and other hostile actions.
Trump said the U.S. Navy would move to block vessels entering or leaving the Strait, while also targeting ships allegedly involved in paying what he described as “illegal tolls” to Iran. He added that international partners could be involved in the enforcement effort.
The posts also referenced a reported 20-hour diplomatic meeting in Pakistan involving U.S. and Iranian representatives, which Trump said made progress on several issues but failed to resolve disputes over Iran’s nuclear program.
According to Trump, the main sticking point remained Iran’s nuclear ambitions, which he said would not be accepted under any circumstances.
He further claimed he had been briefed by senior officials, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, regarding the discussions.
The statements come amid rising regional tensions and heightened concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes.
No immediate official response from Iran was available.
