WASHINGTON, Apr 16: US President Donald Trump announced on social media that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to begin a 10-day ceasefire, following what he described as “excellent conversations” with both sides.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had spoken with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that the two leaders agreed to formally implement the ceasefire starting at 5 p.m. EST in an effort to pave the way toward peace.

“These two Leaders have agreed that in order to achieve PEACE between their Countries, they will formally begin a 10 Day CEASEFIRE at 5 P.M. EST,” Trump wrote, adding that he had directed US Vice President JD Vance and others to work with both sides to secure a lasting settlement.

The announcement comes after Lebanon and Israel held their first direct diplomatic talks in decades earlier this week in Washington, following more than a month of conflict involving Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.

Trump said the discussions marked an “excellent” step forward and urged swift action toward a permanent peace agreement.

Trump said it would mark “the first meaningful talks between Israel and Lebanon since 1983,” adding, “Both sides want to see PEACE, and I believe that will happen, quickly,” in a post on his Truth Social platform.

Israel and Lebanon had signed an agreement in 1983 under which Lebanon would formally recognize Israel in exchange for Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory. However, the deal collapsed amid Lebanon’s civil war and was formally rescinded the following year.
