MANILA, Feb 7, (Xinhua): Tropical depression Penha, sweeping across the Philippines, has killed at least eight people, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said on Saturday. Four members of a family were killed after a landslide struck a village in Cagayan de Oro City in Misamis Oriental province late Thursday night, the OCD said.

Citing Iligan City Mayor Frederick Siao, the agency reported that three other people died in Iligan City, although the causes of death are still being verified.

One person was reported to have drowned in Agusan del Norte province. Penha has triggered flooding and landslides in several parts of the country, particularly in the central and southern regions.

The state weather bureau, PAGASA, said late Friday that Penha had weakened into a tropical depression but would continue to bring heavy rain and strong winds as it traverses the central Philippines. Penha is the second tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines this year.
