BERLIN, Oct 19: Germany has issued a travel alert for France following violent protests, warning travelers to exercise caution and prepare for the possibility of further unrest in the coming days.
“Exercise caution and avoid demonstrations if possible,” Germany’s Foreign Ministry said in a travel advisory published on its website.
The ministry warned that further protests and possible riots could not be ruled out, urging travelers to follow instructions issued by French security forces.
It also cautioned that, under recent changes to French law, people could face fines and claims for damages if they fail to leave unauthorized or violent demonstrations when ordered to do so.
The alert follows clashes in France during demonstrations over the cost of living. French police used tear gas and water cannon against protesters in central Paris on Sunday, a day after nationwide protests were marred by violence.
The demonstrations reportedly resulted in more than 2,000 arrests, according to the information provided in the report.
