KUWAIT CITY, Jan 6: The General Traffic Department affirms that strict enforcement of traffic laws, particularly those related to overlapping violations at roundabouts, traffic lights, and major intersections, has led to a dramatic and unprecedented decline in such offenses. According to security sources, this significant reduction is a direct result of intensified field campaigns and the widespread deployment of traffic officers, with recent statistics clearly reflecting this success.
For example, the number of overlapping violations fell sharply from 823 recorded in a single day in October to just 45 on Monday, January 5, which highlights a substantial improvement in driver compliance with traffic laws and regulations. There was increased vigilance on violations such as illegal overtaking at traffic lights and roundabouts, as these violations are among the most dangerous and are major contributors to traffic accidents and congestion. The sources emphasized that the campaigns are ongoing and are being carried out according to well-planned traffic strategies aimed at enhancing road discipline and enforcing zero tolerance for violations.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior stressed that violating overtaking rules or deliberately obstructing traffic is punishable under the Traffic Law and its implementing regulations. It explained that the law has set deterrent penalties to curb such behaviors, which pose a threat to the safety of road users. Article 37 of the law imposes a fine of KD 15 on drivers who violate overlapping rules, and Article 36 imposes a fine of KD 20 for deliberately obstructing or impeding traffic on public roads. Article 207 of the executive regulations of the law allows for the impounding of a vehicle for a period of up to two months. In cases of repeated violations, the offender will be referred to the competent traffic court to take the necessary legal action
Furthermore, the General Traffic Department continued its traffic campaigns at the start of the new year, which resulted in the detention of 60 reckless drivers for serious violations, including speeding and reckless driving. In addition, 19,000 traffic citations were issued and 254 vehicles were impounded in the past seven days. The department’s weekly statistics also reported the arrest of 11 individuals for residency law violations, the referral of four individuals to the Drug Control General Department, and the handling of 1,302 traffic accidents, including 242 cases of injuries
