KUWAIT CITY, Aug 24: In view of the recent security measures that resulted in the arrest of a criminal network involved in the manufacture and distribution of locally produced alcoholic beverages, which caused poisoning and death to many individuals, the Ministry of Interior announced that the Hawally Governorate Investigations Directorate under the Criminal Investigations General Department raided the main warehouse in Al-Rai.

In a press statement on Sunday, the ministry disclosed that the warehouse supplied local liquor factories with the chemicals used in the alcohol manufacturing process. It said the warehouse belongs to an Egyptian identified as Muhammad Abdo who is currently abroad, and that coordination is underway with Egyptian security authorities to take the necessary legal action against him. The ministry added that the raid resulted in the discovery of about 340 plastic containers with a capacity of 25 liters each, containing toxic chemicals, randomly stored in a location that lacked safety requirements.

It stressed that this is a dangerous hotspot, which could lead to fire or explosion, in addition to the emission of toxic gases or environmental pollution if leaked, and could cause a disaster, threatening lives and properties in the surrounding area. It confirmed that there have been coordinated efforts with Kuwait Fire Force (KFF) to secure the site and deal with the flammable materials, as well as with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Kuwait Municipality to take the necessary legal measures.

The ministry emphasized that it continues to intensify efforts to apprehend anyone who dares to tamper with the security of society, and that it will not be lenient in enforcing the law on everyone. It can be recalled that the Ministry of Health announced earlier the death of 23 people, mostly Asians, and the injury of 160 others as a result of consuming alcoholic beverages contaminated with methanol.
