LOS ANGELES, Oct 2, (Agencies) Tom Hanks took a break from his usual social media updates, where he shares updates on his projects and causes he supports, to issue a cautionary message to his followers. The actor shared a still image from what appears to be a promotional video featuring an AI-generated version of himself. Alongside the image, Hanks wrote, "WARNING!! There is a video circulating promoting a dental plan with an AI replica of me. I am not associated with it." He signed the message without providing further details about the source of the video or its creators.
The AI version of Hanks in the image bears a resemblance to him but looks younger and has a slightly unnatural quality. While the original video was not found, it seems that Hanks issued this warning to safeguard his image and likeness.
In a previous interview on The Adam Buxton Podcast earlier this year, Hanks discussed the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and its use in de-aging actors in films. He mentioned the potential for AI to create entirely new performances from actors, even after their passing. Hanks acknowledged the artistic challenge and legal complexities associated with this technology, which are currently under negotiation by industry guilds like the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.
When asked about viewers' preferences between human and AI-generated performances, Hanks pointed out that while some may be able to distinguish between them, the critical question is whether they will genuinely care. Hanks had prior experience with AI technology during the making of the film "The Polar Express" in 2004, though AI capabilities have since advanced significantly.
