In Washington DC, a CVS store faced a unique solution to combat rising thefts, as toilet paper shelves were replaced with framed photos of the products. To purchase these items, customers must now use a buzzer to summon an employee from a back room. The change was prompted by increased thefts, primarily by homeless individuals, snatching products without payment. The broader trend of robberies in DC has surged by 68% in 2023 compared to the previous year, with over 3,000 incidents reported.

This uptick in thefts is not unique to Washington DC, as major cities across the United States grapple with a significant rise in retail theft. New York City saw a 64% increase in reported incidents between mid-2019 and June 2023, while Los Angeles experienced a 61% surge over the same period. The NYPD reported over 93,000 incidents of petty larceny in 2023, a 29% increase compared to two years ago. Meanwhile, LA witnessed a staggering 109% rise in reported retail theft incidents in the first half of 2023, the highest in the country.

The National Retail Federation revealed that organized theft rings caused significant losses for retailers, totaling $112 billion in 2022, up from $93.9 billion in 2021. This surge in theft has forced many stores nationwide to take drastic measures, including locking up products or shutting their doors altogether. The situation highlights a broader challenge faced by retailers in combating theft and securing their merchandise amid a concerning increase in criminal activities.
