NEW YORK, Jul 3: A man set himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday evening in what authorities are investigating as a protest linked to Tibet.
The incident occurred at around 7 p.m. local time near East 43rd Street and First Avenue, close to the UN complex. According to local media and social media footage, the man placed a flag associated with Tibet's government-in-exile on the sidewalk before setting himself ablaze.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the man to Bellevue Hospital, where he was reported to be in critical condition.
Papers recovered at the scene reportedly carried the message, “China Out of Tibet.” Police launched an investigation, while the flag remained at the site for about an hour after the incident.
China assumed control of Tibet in 1951, describing the move as a “peaceful liberation.” The flag displayed by the protester is linked to Tibet’s government-in-exile, established in northern India after the failed 1959 uprising against Chinese rule. Beijing rejects the government-in-exile and maintains that Tibet has been part of China since the 13th century, while the Dalai Lama has long argued that Tibet was an independent state before Chinese forces entered the region.
