KUWAIT CITY, Jun 25: The State Security Court of Appeals has issued several rulings in cases involving allegations of inciting sedition, promoting extremist ideas and expressing sympathy through social media platforms.
The court upheld a three-year prison sentence against an expat convicted of inciting sedition and sympathy online. The individual had previously been convicted in a state security case.
The court also upheld a three-year imprisonment sentence against a Kuwaiti citizen accused of promoting ideas linked to Hezbollah and inciting sedition.
In other cases, the court overturned three-year prison sentences against two Kuwaiti citizens and instead ruled not to impose imprisonment, ordering financial guarantees of KD3,000 and KD1,000 for good conduct for a period of two years.
The appeals court also overturned an acquittal in the case of a social media user accused of insulting Egypt and Saudi Arabia, as well as promoting Hezbollah-related ideas. The court replaced the acquittal with a decision to refrain from punishment, requiring a KD3,000 guarantee for good behavior for two years.
The court further cancelled decisions involving the non-punishment and acquittal of some citizens accused of inciting sedition and expressing sympathy, while affirming rulings that allowed some defendants to avoid punishment through financial guarantees tied to good conduct.
