PARIS, Jul 6: A daring early morning robbery has struck the Lalique Museum in northeastern France, where thieves made off with nearly €4 million ($4.57 million) worth of crystal jewelry, according to French media reports.
French daily Le Parisien, citing sources familiar with the investigation, reported that several masked suspects forced open a door to the museum on Sunday before smashing six display cases and stealing 20 pieces of crystal jewelry.
Following the heist, the museum announced it will remain closed for the next several days while officials assess the damage and reinforce security measures.
"The gendarmerie intervened, and the investigation will follow its course," the museum said in a statement posted on X.
Christian Dorschner, mayor of Wingen-sur-Moder, said the thieves appeared to have carefully planned the raid, noting they headed directly to the jewelry collection.
"They were well informed," Dorschner told regional newspaper Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace. He added that although the museum's alarm system functioned correctly, the contracted security company failed to alert police immediately.
Authorities are reviewing surveillance camera footage as investigators work to identify the suspects. The case has been assigned to the criminal investigations unit of the Bas-Rhin gendarmerie.
According to Le Parisien, the Lalique Museum had been placed under special security monitoring after the high-profile October 2025 jewel theft at the Louvre Museum, where items valued at around $102 million were stolen
