AHMEDABAD, Jul 6: A cattle herder was seriously injured after being attacked by a lion in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district on Sunday morning, with dramatic video footage capturing the terrifying moments as the wild animal refused to release its grip despite frantic efforts by villagers to rescue the victim.
The attack occurred at around 8:30 a.m. in Garajiya village in Palitana taluka.
According to local officials, the victim, identified as Kalubhai Boghabhai Parmar, had gone outside his home to feed his cows when the lion suddenly emerged and attacked him without warning.
A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the lion pinning Parmar to the ground. The predator is seen gripping one of the man's legs tightly with its paws while clamping his hand in its jaws.
The injured herder can be seen bleeding and desperately struggling to break free as frightened villagers gather around, shouting and attempting to scare the lion away. Despite the commotion, the animal refuses to let go, forcing the rescuers to continue their efforts from a distance while avoiding provoking the lion further.
The harrowing footage ends after villagers persist in trying to drive the animal away, eventually allowing the injured man to be rescued.
Parmar sustained serious injuries in the attack and was rushed for medical treatment. His condition has not been officially disclosed.
The incident has renewed concerns over increasing encounters between lions and humans in parts of Gujarat, where the population of Asiatic lions has expanded beyond protected forest areas into nearby villages and agricultural land, leading to more frequent conflicts with local residents.
Forest officials are investigating the attack and monitoring the area to prevent further incidents.
