KUWAIT CITY, Aug 23: Kuwait and China showcased their shared love of tea and hospitality on Sunday as traditional Chinese tea-making rituals were presented as part of the 18th Summer Cultural Festival.
The event was organized by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) in cooperation with the Chinese Cultural Center in Kuwait, with the aim of promoting cultural exchange and highlighting similarities between Chinese and Arab tea traditions.
NCCAL Secretary-General Dr. Mohammed Al-Jassar said the event reflected the close cooperation between the council and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and their shared commitment to strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.
Al-Jassar said the gathering went beyond simply demonstrating how tea is prepared and served, offering visitors an insight into an authentic part of Chinese culture and traditions passed down through generations.
He highlighted the similarities between Chinese tea rituals and Kuwaiti and Arab traditions, saying the preparation and serving of tea can bring people together regardless of differences in language, geography or customs.
“Tea is not merely a daily habit in many cultures, but also a means of communication that brings people together and bridges distances,” Al-Jassar said. He noted that tea rituals embody values such as hospitality, respect, calmness and dialogue, which transcend cultural and geographical boundaries.
Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait Yang Xin said the event was part of the ongoing cooperation between the Chinese Cultural Center and NCCAL and reflected the strong cultural ties between Kuwait and China.
Yang noted that 2026 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Kuwait and China, describing the milestone as an opportunity to further expand cooperation, particularly in the cultural field.
He also pointed out that the Chinese Cultural Center in Kuwait is the first Chinese cultural center in a Gulf state, serving as an important platform for cultural exchange and closer communication between the peoples of Kuwait and China.
The event featured demonstrations and presentations on Chinese tea culture, interactive activities, an exhibition of traditional tea-related items and tasting sessions. Visitors were also offered selected Chinese teas alongside traditional sweets representing both Chinese and Arab cultures, creating a cultural experience centered on one of the world’s most enduring symbols of hospitality and social connection.
