LOS ANGELES, Nov 6, (Agencies): Taylor Swift’s “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” is smashing records, marking her best-ever debut week for an album. Following its release on October 27, the reimagined version of Swift’s 2014 pop album burst onto the music scene by claiming the number one position on the Billboard 200 chart, amassing an impressive 1.653 million equivalent album units. This accomplishment eclipsed her previous high of 1.578 million units achieved with “Midnights,” leaving it in the dust. On a global scale, the album achieved a phenomenal 3.5 million equivalent units sold.

Comparing this to the original release of the album, which moved a modest 1.297 million units during its first week nearly a decade ago, shows the remarkable growth in Swift’s popularity and the enthusiasm for her re-recorded works.

This groundbreaking achievement at the age of 33 established Taylor Swift as the first artist ever to attain six No. 1 album debuts with over 1 million units sold. Moreover, the album has become the most significant release by any artist since Adele’s 2015 masterpiece, “25,” which debuted with a whopping 3.482 million album units.

With the release of “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” Swift now officially possesses 80 percent of her discography. Fans eagerly await announcements of the release dates for the two remaining album re-records.

The journey to reclaim her music began in 2019, after music executive Scooter Braun acquired her former label, Big Machine, for a reported $300 million. Through this acquisition, Braun gained majority ownership of Swift’s master recordings. Swift vocally expressed her discontent with this deal, stating that she had requested the opportunity to own her own work but was denied.

In response to Braun, Swift promptly revealed her intentions to re-record her early discography, releasing versions of her music with masters that she owned. These new versions of her original albums bear the moniker “Taylor’s Version” and include additional, previously unreleased “From The Vault” tracks.

The public got a sneak peek into Swift’s plans for the “Taylor’s Version” takeover during her appearance on CBS Sunday Morning on Aug 21, 2019. In the interview, the singer revealed that she had learned of Braun’s deal “when it was online,” reiterating her desire to take ownership of the music she had written and performed.

Since making this announcement, Swift has not only re-recorded “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” but has also released three more original albums: “Folklore,” “Evermore,” and “Midnights.” In addition, she has delivered re-recordings of “Fearless (Taylor’s Version),” “Red (Taylor’s Version),” and “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).” In a testament to her relentless work ethic, Swift embarked on her Eras Tour, taking all her music on the road for her devoted fans to enjoy.
