MUSCAT, Sep 18: A tanker was struck by an “unknown projectile” in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, causing a fire onboard, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Center said.
The fire was later extinguished, while all crew members were reported safe, UKMTO said in a statement issued through X. The agency added that the environmental impact remained unconfirmed.
UKMTO did not identify the tanker or provide further details about the projectile or the circumstances surrounding the incident. It urged vessels transiting the strategic waterway to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO while authorities investigate.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route for global energy shipments, where commercial vessels have faced increased risks amid ongoing regional tensions.
