MUSCAT, Aug 1: A commercial tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile off the coast of Oman, leaving the vessel disabled after its engine room was damaged, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
According to UKMTO, the incident occurred approximately 11 nautical miles northeast of Lima, Oman, when the tanker was hit by an unknown projectile. The vessel's company security officer reported that the impact caused significant damage to the engine room, leaving the ship not under command.
The maritime security agency did not immediately identify the type of projectile or provide details about the vessel, its crew, or any casualties.
UKMTO said the incident remains under investigation and urged all ships transiting the area to exercise heightened caution. Mariners were also advised to immediately report any suspicious activity or security-related incidents to the relevant authorities.
