‘Take urgent action, save lives’

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 13: Salmi Highway has turned into a soul snatcher during the recent period due to the spread of potholes that cause catastrophic accidents, the most recent of which occurred last Friday. A Saudi family was involved in a road accident, resulting in the death of the breadwinner and serious injuries to his six passengers, reports Al-Qabas daily. A tour conducted of the road by the daily a few days ago revealed significant deterioration in its condition. Potholes were spread over wide distances of several kilometers, as well as flying gravel in different locations along the road, making the task of driving extremely difficult.

Activists on Twitter, using the hashtag “#roadofdeath” criticized the significant deterioration of the road and the lack of action by the responsible authorities represented by the Ministry of Public Works and the Public Authority for Roads and Transportation (PART), despite the recurrence of accidents during the recent period.

Citizens called for the need to take quick action and repair the damaged parts of the road due to its importance for travelers by land, as well as the dependence of Kuwaiti visitors who arrive by land using this road. They said the state of the road clearly reflects the deterioration of the level of roads in all parts of the country, which gives a negative image, and affirms the need for officials in government agencies to take rapid action to save lives in light of the recurrence of accidents.

According to a number of motorists, driving on Salmi Highway has become a risk in itself, as the spread of potholes requires vehicle drivers to try to avoid them from time to time, which sometimes causes accidents.
