DAMASCUS, July 17: A Syrian military source has denied claims by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that it struck the Al-Tanf military base in southeastern Syria, according to AFP.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said, "We deny any Iranian bombardment targeting the Al-Tanf area," rejecting reports that the base had come under attack.
Earlier, the IRGC claimed it had targeted the Al-Tanf facility as part of its retaliatory operations in response to US military strikes, alleging the attack destroyed military equipment and inflicted casualties.
However, the Syrian denial casts doubt on those claims. There was also no immediate confirmation from US authorities regarding any attack on the site.
US forces had announced earlier this year that they had withdrawn from the Al-Tanf base, where troops had previously been deployed as part of the US-led coalition against jihadist groups.
The conflicting statements come amid heightened tensions across the Middle East following an escalation in hostilities between the United States and Iran.
